ECCOsedum are slabs for green roofs , ready to use, composed of 5 layers with at least 7 species of sedums combined in a cassette.

In our regions, like Scandinavia, Germany and Austria, green roofs are experiencing growing success. The covering of green roofs is essentially made up of living plants . One of the great advantages of a green roof is that it can reduce rainwater drainage. This therefore helps to avoid flooding. The green roof provides thermal and acoustic insulation . In addition, it is not only beautiful to look at, it also gives a pronounced green image.

ECCOsedum are slabs for green roofs, ready to use, composed of 5 layers with at least 7 species of sedums combined in a cassette.
ECCOsedum are easy-to-handle slabs – they are also called cassettes – which can be installed by a single person on the (existing) roof covering. You don't need to be a specialist to install ECCOsedum green roof tiles. ECCOsedum green roofs combine 5 layers, each with its specific function, and light weight.
ECCOsedum is a Belgian product, the plastic tile like the “pre-cultivated” sedum plants, everything is made in Belgium.

Benefits :

  • Easy to handle: installing the green roof is very easy and can be done by one person.
  • Weight of the layer per m²: between 30 and 55 kg/m². The ECCOsedum system can therefore be installed on practically all existing roofs.
  • Installation can be carried out throughout the year. Whereas the creation of vegetation that is planted on site should not take place in summer or winter.
  • The system is easily removed if necessary; in the case of water infiltration or works, for example.
  • Regular thickness of the substrate. Unlike a massive green roof whose thickness can vary from 1 to 8 cm and which, therefore, can lead to the development of weeds.
  • Very flat support points arranged on the sides of the slab ensure even better pressure distribution. This is not the case for other ready-to-install systems.

The strata:

Vegetation layer:

Succulents have the ability to survive in a thin layer of substrate (limiting weight on the roof) and they can withstand dry periods more easily than other plants. ECCOsedum uses no less than 7 species of fully rooted sedums which densely cover the entire surface (therefore, weeds have little chance of developing there). Adult plants, well rooted in the substrate, guarantee perfect coverage of the green roof. In order for the distribution to be uniform, all species are planted in equivalent quantities.

Substrate layer:

The substrate layer performs several functions. It supplies the vegetation with water and nutrients, it provides oxygen and allows the roots to anchor themselves. To do this, ECCOsedum uses a roof garden substrate whose composition is as follows: washed bims 4 to 8 mm: 40%, lava 3 to 8 mm: 35%, coconut: 15%, garden peat: 10 %. This layer is the most important when it comes to culture. Its thickness has been adapted to the requirements of the sedum species used and the climatological data of our climatic zone. The following properties are essential:

  • lightness
  • balanced culture medium
  • great capacity to retain water
  • consistent quality guaranteed

Filter layer:

This layer prevents leaching of the substrate. The fine particles of the substrate are retained by a 150 g/m² non-woven polyester fabric. The weight of the canvas has been chosen so that weighted particles (see maintenance) cannot accumulate there. A canvas that is too heavy can cause plants to die back.

Water retention layer:

This water reserve helps plants survive during dry periods. The lower half of the slab also temporarily retains rainwater. On the other hand, stagnant water could cause root rot during a period of vegetative rest (winter). ECCOsedum offers a solution to this problem in the form of a water buffer created by capillarity in a substrate made of slightly expanded clay granules (fractions: 4 to 8 mm). To prevent water from stagnating between the cavities of the clay substrate, drainage holes were provided on the lower and upper faces of this layer. Excess water will therefore flow through these openings. The drain holes are located 1 cm from the bottom, so that non-capillary water can also be collected. Tests have shown that root growth is not negatively affected and an additional water reserve is thus available.

Drainage layer:

This layer allows excess rainwater to easily flow over the roof membrane, without hindering water drainage.
