Pre-cultivated sedum tile for green roof - ECCOsedum - ECCO

In our regions, like Scandinavia, Germany and Austria, green roofs are becoming increasingly popular. The roofing of green roofs is essentially made up of living plants. One of the great advantages of a green roof is that it can reduce stormwater drainage. This prevents flooding. The green roof provides thermal and acoustic insulation. In addition, it is not only beautiful to see, it also gives a pronounced ecological image.

ECCOsedum are ready-to-use green roof slabs, composed of 5 layers with at least 7 species of sedums combined in a cassette.
ECCOsedum is simple to handle slabs — they are also called cassettes — that can be placed by a single person on the (existing) roofing. You don't have to be a specialist to lay the ECCOsedum green roof tiles. ECCOsedum green roofs combine 5 layers, each with its specific function, and a light weight.
ECCOsedum is a Belgian product, the plastic slab like the "pre-cultivated" sedum plants, the whole is made in Belgium.

Benefits:

  • Easily handled: installing the green roof is very easy and can be done by a person.
  • Weight of the layer per sq m: between 30 and 55 kg/m2. As a result, the ECCOsedum system can be installed on virtually all existing roofs.
  • The installation can be carried out throughout the year. While vegetation planted on site should not take place in summer or winter.
  • The system is easily removed when necessary; in the case of water infiltration or work, for example.
  • Regular thickness of the substrate. In contrast to a massive green roof that can vary in thickness from 1 to 8 cm and can lead to the development of weeds.
  • Well-flat support points on the sides of the slab ensure an even better pressure distribution. This is not the case for other systems ready to install.

The strata:

Vegetation layer:

Fatty plants have the ability to survive in a thin layer of substrate (weight limitation on the roof) and can withstand dry periods more easily than other plants. ECCOsedum uses no less than 7 species of fully rooted sedums that cover the entire surface (weeds are therefore unlikely to grow there). The adult plants, well rooted in the substrate, guarantee a perfect coverage of the green roof. In order for the distribution to be uniform, all species are planted in equivalent quantities.

Substrate layer:

The substrate layer performs several functions. It supplies vegetation with water and nutrients, provides oxygen and allows roots to anchor. To do this, ECCOsedum uses a roof garden substrate with the following composition: bims washed 4 to 8 mm: 40%, lava 3 to 8 mm: 35%, coconut: 15%, garden peat: 10%. This layer is the most important in terms of culture. Its thickness has been adapted to the requirements of the sedum species used and to the climatological data of our climatic zone. The following properties are paramount:

  • Lightness
  • balanced culture environment
  • great ability to hold water
  • Guaranteed consistent quality

Filter layer:

This layer prevents the substrate from being leached. The fine particles of the substrate are retained by a non-woven polyester canvas of 150 g/m2. The weight of the canvas has been chosen in such a way that weighted particles (see maintenance) cannot accumulate there. A canvas that is too heavy can cause the plants to wither.

Water retention layer:

This water supply helps plants survive dry periods. The bottom half of the slab also temporarily retains rainwater. Standing water, on the other hand, could cause root rot during a period of vegetative rest (winter). ECCOsedum proposes a solution to this problem in the form of a water buffer created by capillarity in a substrate made up of slightly expanded clay pellets (fractions: 4 to 8 mm). To prevent water from stagnating between the clay substrate cavities, flow holes have been installed on the undersides and upper sides of this layer. The excess water will therefore flow through these openings. The flow holes are located 1 cm from the bottom, so that non-hair water can also be collected. Tests have shown that there are no negative effects to root growth and that an additional supply of water is available.

Drainage layer:

This layer allows excess rainwater to flow easily over the roof membrane without impeding water evacuation.

General features:

  • Green roof slabs that are fully pre-cultivated and ready to lay.
  • Base material of slabs: polypropylene (PP).
  • UV light: The slabs have been impregnated with a UV stabilizer.
  • Resists chemicals.
  • Weight per slab: about 8 to 12.5 kg/slab.
  • Weight per sq m: about 30 to 55 kg/m2.
  • Dimensions: 45 cm x 49.5 cm, height 8.5 cm (4.4 slabs/m2).
