Areas of application
SikaCeram-290 StarLight is suitable for bonding the following types of tiles:
- All types of ceramic tiles, including large-format porcelain stoneware and thin slabs
- Installation of marble and other natural stones, provided they are not sensitive to water.
SikaCeram-290 StarLight can be used indoors and outdoors, on floors and walls, on the following substrates:
- Cement and gypsum-based substrate
- Existing sound ceramic tiles or stone, paint, interior
- Sound existing PVC sheet flooring, linoleum and vinyl tiles, inside.
SikaCeram-290 StarLight is suitable for applications requiring high performance, such as:
- Swimming pools
- Installation on heated floors (hydraulic and electric systems)
- Industrial floors and floors subject to heavy use
- Facades
- Spot bonding of polystyrene, polyurethane foam, rock wool or glass wool insulation panels
Application
- SikaCeram-290 StarLight is applied using a notched trowel.
- The quantity of product must be sufficient to completely coat the back face of the tiles.
- The tiles must be laid on freshly applied adhesive, applying adequate pressure to ensure complete and uniform contact with the adhesive and therefore optimal adhesion.
If a film appears to form on the surface, the adhesive has been left unused for too long; if this happens, immediately remove the adhesive layer with a trowel, discard this material and apply a fresh layer of SikaCeram-290 StarLight adhesive. - Avoid application in direct sunlight and/or in strong winds/drafts.
- SikaCeram-290 StarLight is specifically designed as the ideal product for laying non-absorbent tiles indoors, without any limitations on tile dimensions or substrate.
Outdoors, it is preferable to lay non-absorbent tiles smaller than 10000 cm2 (e.g. 100 x 100 cm) for floors, and 7000 cm2 (e.g. 80 x 80 cm) for walls without the aid of mechanical fixing.
These limits are valid for non-heated, cement-based supports. - For laying tiles larger than 900 cm² (e.g. 30 x 30 cm), it is always recommended to apply the double-bonding technique.
Consumption
Consumption is a function of the surface profile and roughness of the substrate, the size of the tiles and the installation technique (gluing on one side or double-sided).
As a guide, in kilograms of powder per m²:
- Small tiles/6 mm notched trowel: ~ 1.3 kg/m²
- Standard tiles/8 mm notched trowel: ~ 1.6 kg/m²
- Large tiles/10 mm notched trowel: ~ 2.0 kg/m²
Packaging:
15 kg bag in Grey.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
- Is SikaCeram-290 StarLight suitable for large formats?
Yes, its S1 deformation and excellent adhesion make it an ideal adhesive for large format floor and wall tiles (double gluing recommended). - Can it be used with underfloor heating?
Yes, it is compatible with water-based underfloor heating systems. For electric systems, check the manufacturer's DTU or SDS. - Is a primer necessary before application?
For porous surfaces, Sika primer is recommended. For existing tiles, clean and degrease them, and sometimes apply a primer. For new concrete, wait for the required drying time. - Can it be used outdoors?
Yes, terraces, balconies, facades. Ensure that you respect the weather conditions (do not apply in the rain or in direct sunlight). - Is it suitable for natural stone?
Yes, if the stone is stable in humidity. For stones prone to migration, use a dedicated, flexible white adhesive (StarLight is white, so generally safe). - What is the yield?
Approximately: 3–5 kg/m² for walls. 4–7 kg/m² for floors depending on the size of the teeth. - How long before I can walk on it?
Wait 24 hours under normal conditions (often longer in cold/humid weather). - Can it be used in a walk-in shower?
Yes, provide waterproofing under the tiles (SPEC/MAPE or Sika) before gluing.
