SikaCeram-290 StarLight - Variable-use tile adhesive EC 1 PLUS - Sika

SikaCeram-290 StarLight is a deformable, one-component adhesive mortar composed of high mechanical strength cements , a high polymer content, selected silica/quartz fillers and specific additives.

This tile adhesive is suitable for creating deformable layers up to 15 mm thick.
Suitable for laying porcelain stoneware and natural stone on facades , heated floors , swimming pools and industrial floors.
EC 1 PLUS label: very low VOC emissions .

Features

  • Multiflow: adhesive mortar suitable for thin or fluid application
  • High coverage (up to 80% more coverage compared to a standard tile adhesive)
  • Low dust emission
  • EC 1 PLUS label: very low VOC emissions .
  • Recycled raw materials
  • Deformable
  • No vertical slippage
  • Extended opening hours

Areas of application

SikaCeram-290 StarLight is suitable for bonding the following types of tiles:

  • All types of ceramic tiles, including large-format porcelain stoneware and thin slabs
  • Installation of marble and other natural stones, provided they are not sensitive to water.

SikaCeram-290 StarLight can be used indoors and outdoors, on floors and walls, on the following substrates:

  • Cement and gypsum-based substrate
  • Existing sound ceramic tiles or stone, paint, interior
  • Sound existing PVC sheet flooring, linoleum and vinyl tiles, inside.

SikaCeram-290 StarLight is suitable for applications requiring high performance, such as:

  • Swimming pools
  • Installation on heated floors (hydraulic and electric systems)
  • Industrial floors and floors subject to heavy use
  • Facades
  • Spot bonding of polystyrene, polyurethane foam, rock wool or glass wool insulation panels

Application

  1. SikaCeram-290 StarLight is applied using a notched trowel.
  2. The quantity of product must be sufficient to completely coat the back face of the tiles.
  3. The tiles must be laid on freshly applied adhesive, applying adequate pressure to ensure complete and uniform contact with the adhesive and therefore optimal adhesion.
If a film appears to form on the surface, the adhesive has been left unused for too long; if this happens, immediately remove the adhesive layer with a trowel, discard this material and apply a fresh layer of SikaCeram-290 StarLight adhesive.
  4. Avoid application in direct sunlight and/or in strong winds/drafts.
  5. SikaCeram-290 StarLight is specifically designed as the ideal product for laying non-absorbent tiles indoors, without any limitations on tile dimensions or substrate.
Outdoors, it is preferable to lay non-absorbent tiles smaller than 10000 cm2 (e.g. 100 x 100 cm) for floors, and 7000 cm2 (e.g. 80 x 80 cm) for walls without the aid of mechanical fixing.
These limits are valid for non-heated, cement-based supports.
  6. For laying tiles larger than 900 cm² (e.g. 30 x 30 cm), it is always recommended to apply the double-bonding technique.

Consumption

Consumption is a function of the surface profile and roughness of the substrate, the size of the tiles and the installation technique (gluing on one side or double-sided).
As a guide, in kilograms of powder per m²:

  • Small tiles/6 mm notched trowel: ~ 1.3 kg/m²
  • Standard tiles/8 mm notched trowel: ~ 1.6 kg/m²
  • Large tiles/10 mm notched trowel: ~ 2.0 kg/m²

Packaging:

15 kg bag in Grey.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is SikaCeram-290 StarLight suitable for large formats?
Yes, its S1 deformation and excellent adhesion make it an ideal adhesive for large format floor and wall tiles (double gluing recommended).
  2. Can it be used with underfloor heating?
Yes, it is compatible with water-based underfloor heating systems. For electric systems, check the manufacturer's DTU or SDS.
  3. Is a primer necessary before application?
For porous surfaces, Sika primer is recommended. For existing tiles, clean and degrease them, and sometimes apply a primer. For new concrete, wait for the required drying time.
  4. Can it be used outdoors?
Yes, terraces, balconies, facades. Ensure that you respect the weather conditions (do not apply in the rain or in direct sunlight).
  5. Is it suitable for natural stone?
Yes, if the stone is stable in humidity. For stones prone to migration, use a dedicated, flexible white adhesive (StarLight is white, so generally safe).
  6. What is the yield?
Approximately: 3–5 kg/m² for walls. 4–7 kg/m² for floors depending on the size of the teeth.
  7. How long before I can walk on it?
Wait 24 hours under normal conditions (often longer in cold/humid weather).
  8. Can it be used in a walk-in shower?
Yes, provide waterproofing under the tiles (SPEC/MAPE or Sika) before gluing.
