Pre-cultivated sedum slab for green roofs - ECCOsedum - ECCO

ECCOsedum are ready-to-use green roof tiles composed of 5 layers with at least 7 species of sedums combined in a cassette.

In our region, as in Scandinavia, Germany, and Austria, green roofs are enjoying increasing popularity. Green roofs are essentially covered with living plants . One of the major advantages of a green roof is its ability to reduce rainwater runoff, thus preventing flooding. Green roofs also provide thermal and acoustic insulation . Furthermore, they are not only aesthetically pleasing but also create a striking green image.

ECCOsedum are ready-to-use green roof tiles composed of 5 layers with at least 7 species of sedums combined in a cassette.
ECCOsedum panels are easy to handle—also called cassettes—that can be installed by a single person over the existing roof covering. You don't need to be a specialist to install ECCOsedum green roof panels. ECCOsedum green roofs combine five layers, each with its specific function, and are lightweight.
ECCOsedum is a Belgian product, the plastic tile as well as the "pre-cultivated" sedum plants, everything is made in Belgium.

Benefits :

  • Easy to handle: the installation of the green roof is very easy and can be done by one person.
  • Weight of the layer per m²: between 30 and 55 kg/m². The ECCOsedum system can therefore be installed on virtually all existing roofs.
  • The installation can be carried out throughout the year. However, planting vegetation on-site should not take place in summer or winter.
  • The system can be easily removed if necessary; for example, in the case of water leaks or construction work.
  • Consistent substrate thickness. In contrast to a massive green roof, the thickness of which can vary from 1 to 8 cm and which, therefore, can lead to the development of weeds.
  • Flat support points positioned along the sides of the slab ensure even better pressure distribution. This is not the case with other ready-to-install systems.

The layers:

Vegetation layer:

Succulents can thrive in a thin layer of substrate (limiting the weight on the roof) and tolerate dry periods more easily than other plants. ECCOsedum uses no fewer than seven fully rooted sedum species that densely cover the entire surface (thus limiting the chances of weed growth). The mature plants, firmly established in the substrate, ensure perfect coverage of the green roof. To guarantee even distribution, all species are planted in equal quantities.

Substrate layer:

The substrate layer serves several functions. It supplies the plants with water and nutrients, provides oxygen, and allows the roots to anchor themselves. For this purpose, ECCOsedum uses a roof garden substrate with the following composition: 4-8 mm washed bims: 40%, 3-8 mm lava rock: 35%, coconut coir: 15%, and garden peat: 10%. This layer is the most important for cultivation. Its thickness has been adapted to the requirements of the sedum species used and the climatic conditions of our climate zone. The following properties are essential:

  • lightness
  • balanced culture medium
  • large capacity to retain water
  • Consistent quality guaranteed

Filter layer:

This layer prevents the substrate from leaching. Fine substrate particles are retained by a 150 g/m² non-woven polyester fabric. The fabric's weight has been chosen so that weighted particles (see maintenance) cannot accumulate on it. A fabric that is too heavy can cause plants to wither.

Water retention layer:

This water reserve helps plants survive during dry periods. The lower half of the slab also temporarily retains rainwater. However, stagnant water could cause root rot during a period of dormancy (winter). ECCOsedum offers a solution to this problem in the form of a water buffer created by capillary action within a substrate made of slightly expanded clay granules (fractions: 4 to 8 mm). To prevent water from stagnating between the cavities of the clay substrate, drainage holes have been incorporated into the upper and lower surfaces of this layer. Excess water will therefore drain through these openings. The drainage holes are located 1 cm from the bottom, so that non-capillary water can also be collected. Tests have proven that root growth is not negatively affected and that an additional water reserve is thus available.

Drainage layer:

This layer allows excess rainwater to flow easily over the roof membrane, without hindering water drainage.

General characteristics:

  • Green roof tiles that are fully pre-cultivated and ready to install.
  • Base material of the slabs: polypropylene (PP).
  • UV light: the slabs have been impregnated with a UV stabilizer.
  • Resistant to chemicals.
  • Weight per slab: approx. 8 to 12.5 kg/slab.
  • Weight per m²: approx. 30 to 55 kg/m².
  • Dimensions: 45 cm x 49.5 cm, height 8.5 cm (4.4 slabs/m²).

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is the slab ready to be laid?
Yes, ECCOsedum slabs are delivered pre-cultivated and ready to be laid immediately on a suitable support (suitable waterproofing, drainage and protection).
  2. Should it be watered regularly?
No, sedums are very drought-tolerant plants. Watering is only necessary in cases of prolonged drought, especially during the first year.
  3. What kind of maintenance is required?
Maintenance is minimal, 1 to 2 checks per year. Removal of unwanted plants if necessary. Checking of water drainage.
  4. Can these tiles be installed on a sloping roof?
Yes, on a slight slope, provided that the technical recommendations are respected (anti-slip system if necessary).
  5. What is the weight of a sedum slab?
The weight depends on the substrate's moisture content (dry/saturated). It is designed to remain compatible with most structures intended for extensive green roofs.
  6. Is the slab resistant to frost and heat?
Yes, the sedums used are hardy, able to withstand winter frost as well as intense summer heat.
  7. Is it compatible with an existing roof?
Yes, provided the waterproofing is in good condition and suitable for green roofs. A preliminary check is always recommended.
