A little information on cast iron in roadworks.

Cast iron is a mixture of carbon and iron that differs from steel in its carbon content.

In steel, the carbon content is less than 1%, whereas in cast iron it is commonly around 4%, it can even go up to 6.67%, which is the saturation threshold.

Adding carbon lowers the melting point of the metal and makes it more fluid. This makes it easier to give the metal complex shapes.

Ductile iron

To improve the strength of the cast iron, foundry workers add magnesium to the pouring ladle, which transforms these graphite flakes into nodules: this is GS cast iron (Spheroidal Graphite Cast Iron) or ductile cast iron.

This treatment gives the cast iron greater elasticity and, above all, greater resistance.

This material is widely used for manhole covers for roads which can easily withstand the passage of cars and trucks.

Grey cast iron

During the cooling of the molten metal, the carbon crystallizes in the form of long, narrow graphite flakes to produce grey cast iron which has good resistance to compression and abrasion, but which has the disadvantage of being brittle.

A more economical product than steel, grey cast iron is widely used in the form of castings, but also in the form of plates intended to cover manholes on stormwater and wastewater networks.

In most cases, these cast iron manholes are made up of two parts: a frame of varying width with a U-shaped groove, and a square or round cover with a T-shaped underside.

By placing the pad on the frame, the two U and T shapes form a natural siphon that prevents bad odors from rising.

Grey cast iron manholes are lighter and more economical, but cannot be used on heavily trafficked roads; they are best suited for green spaces, at the base of walls, or in pedestrian walkways.

Cast iron's resistance to rust

These street covers and manholes are usually covered with a tar-based surface protection, but this coating is rarely thick, which means that, when exposed to the elements, they rust quickly.

However, this rust does not affect the product's resistance.

Cast iron can be repainted with bituminous products.

Example of resistance and load classes according to EN 124 standard

Class A15 15 kN control load

Areas likely to be used exclusively by pedestrians and cyclists.

Class B125 125 kN control load

Pedestrian zones and comparable areas, parking areas and multi-storey car parks.

Class C250 250 kN control load

For the crowning devices installed in the area of the gutters at the edges along the traffic lanes and sidewalks.

Class D400 400 kN control load

Road traffic lanes (including pedestrian streets), stabilized shoulders (Figure 6) and parking areas for all types of road vehicles.

Class E600 600 kN control load

Areas imposing high axle loads, for example docks, aircraft runways.

Class F900 900 kN control load

Areas subject to particularly high axle loads, for example, aircraft runways

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the B125 class?
Class B125, as defined by standard EN 124, indicates that the cover can support a maximum load of 12.5 tonnes. It is suitable for pedestrian areas, sidewalks, private driveways and car parks for light vehicles.
  2. Can these inspection chambers be used on a road with heavy traffic?
No, for roads, highways or areas frequented by heavy goods vehicles, it is recommended to use covers of class C250, D400 or higher.
  3. Is the lid frost and weather resistant?
Yes, the cast iron used offers excellent resistance to frost, humidity and climatic variations, guaranteeing a long lifespan even outdoors.
  4. Are these inspection chambers suitable for rainwater drainage?
Yes, the hydraulic models in the LINE ECO range are designed to facilitate the flow of surface water and protect sanitation networks.
  5. Is the installation complex?
No, LINE ECO manholes and covers are designed for quick and easy installation, by professionals as well as experienced individuals, respecting the usual implementation rules.
  6. Do they require any special maintenance?
Very little. Periodic visual inspection and occasional cleaning are sufficient to ensure their proper functioning.
