Sika Boom-553 Low Expansion - EC 1 PLUS low expansion polyurethane foam - Sika
Sika Boom-553 Low Expansion is a single-component, self-expanding polyurethane foam for application by gun.
It is ideal for filling connecting joints around window and door frames, as it has low subsequent expansion as well as low expansive pressure.
EC 1 PLUS label: very low VOC emissions.
Features
- Low expansive pressure
- Slight subsequent expansion
- Very high yield
- Single-component, ready to use
- Good thermal insulation
- Can be cut, sanded and painted
- Professional application with a spray gun
- EC 1 PLUS label: very low VOC emissions.
Areas of application
The product is designed to:
- Insulation and filling of cavities and voids
- Filling the joints around window and door frames
- Insulation against cold and drafts
- Filling around pipes/conduit penetrations
The product can be used for indoor and outdoor applications.
Application
- Pre-moisten the surface with clean water.
This ensures that the foam polymerizes correctly and prevents unwanted expansion of the foam. - Shake the aerosol can well at least 20 times before use.
Note: Repeat the shaking after long interruptions during use. - Remove the aerosol can cap.
- Screw the aerosol can onto the threads of the application gun.
- Dispense the foam by pressing the trigger.
IMPORTANT: To ensure proper flow, hold the aerosol upside down during dispensing.
Note: The amount of foam extruded can be adjusted by applying more or less pressure to the trigger or by using the flow adjustment screw on the application gun. - Fill the deep joints in several layers.
IMPORTANT: Allow each layer to expand and harden sufficiently before wetting it again with water for the application of the next layer.
Note: Only partially fill voids/cavities as the foam expands during hardening.
Small gaps can be filled using an extension tube, although this will reduce the foam flow rate.
Consumption
Joint yield based on a 20 mm × 50 mm joint
Foam yield: ~49 liters
Yield per joint: ~30 m
Packaging
750ml aerosols with rubber valve.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between low-expansion foam and standard foam?
Low-expansion foam expands much less during application. This prevents deformation of sensitive surfaces such as frames, unlike standard, more expansive foams. - Can Sika Boom-553 foam be used to fix windows?
Yes, that's actually one of its main applications. Its low expansion ensures a clean seal without excessive pressure. - Does the foam adhere to damp surfaces?
Slight humidity promotes hardening, but surfaces should not be wet or dripping. - Can you paint the foam once it's dry?
Yes, once completely hardened and sanded if necessary, it can be painted or coated. - What is the total curing time?
The surface typically hardens in 5 to 10 minutes, and complete hardening occurs after 12 to 24 hours depending on conditions. - Is the foam water-resistant?
It is moisture resistant once hardened, but it is advisable to protect the foam outdoors with a suitable coating or sealant. - Is it suitable for soundproofing?
Yes, its fine-cell structure offers good sound absorption in gaps and cavities.
